Ojo Sarco Library Feels Like Home

Ojo Sarco, NM is an unincorporated community located in Rio Arriba County.

This visit was personal for me as I grew up in Ojo Sarco. Seeing the community center again brought back memories of gathering for birthday parties and baby showers to celebrate my neighbors. Connecting with Kathryn Vigil, Carol Miller and her husband Larry to hear about the growth of the center deepened my appreciation for the place.

The Ojo Sarco Community Center and Library was first organized in 1988, inside what had once been a one-room schoolhouse. The original building dates back to the 1930s and remains under the stewardship of the community center. It’s a piece of history repurposed for the future. They started offering library services in 1990 operating with a “take a book, leave a book” system.

Fast-forward to this summer’s programming which included slime-making, water balloon fights, quilting, and sock puppets. These activities are fun for kids and are opportunities for learning, bonding, and building confidence.

The center organizes enriching outings such as a trip to the Santa Fe Opera for families and the County Fair for seniors. Twice a week a certified volunteer leads exercise classes tailored to seniors that focus on fall prevention. And the center even coordinated first-aid and CPR training for youth.

One of the most heartwarming initiatives is the Detour Café gatherings, where neighbors come together over coffee and chat. These events are cherished moments of community bonding.

The community center is a lifeline for residents. Vital services such as Wi-Fi access, printing, phone service, and public computers are accessible to all. Twice a month, the site facilitates food distribution to over 50 families. During the school year, local schools operate Monday through Thursday. The center steps in to offer Friday lunches, ensuring no child goes without.

With recently installed solar panels and battery backup, the center is a designated resiliency site in case of emergency or disaster. This is a testament to forward-thinking leadership and deep-rooted commitment to the community.

In every book read, every child fed, and every neighbor greeted with a warm cup of coffee, the Ojo Sarco Community Center and Library reminds us all what it means to truly belong.
